Doctor Assaulted By Shiv Sena Corporator Resigns, Leaves Thane: 'I Will Never Go Back' Published By, Last Updated: July 09, 2026, 10:38 IST A doctor assaulted by a Shiv Sena corporator in Thane resigned, fearing for his safety. The incident, captured on video, sparked outrage and protests. Doctors assaulted by Shiv Sena corporator at Thane hospital (Video screengrabs/PTI) One of the doctors who was allegedly assaulted by a Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) corporator inside a civic-run hospital in Maharashtra’s Thane district has resigned from his job and left the city, saying he fears for his safety after the attack. According to NDTV, one of the doctors assaulted by Shiv Sena leader Ramesh Mhatre at the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC)-run Shastri Nagar Hospital said he has resigned because of the fear created by the incident and has no intention of returning to Thane. “I have resigned because there is a lot of fear. Goons are watching us, and I have already left the city.
They are very dangerous people. The other doctors may continue working there, but I cannot. I will not go back there again," the doctor was quoted as saying. The doctor’s resignation comes days after a video showing the alleged assault on doctors and hospital staff was widely shared on social media, triggering widespread outrage among the medical fraternity and prompting protests by healthcare workers. The incident took place on Monday evening at the KDMC-run Shastri Nagar Hospital in Kalyan, Maharashtra. Police said doctors Srishti Bawiskar and Vaibhav Salunkhe had advised the relatives of a newborn to shift the baby to another medical facility because there was no space available in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The family allegedly contacted ruling Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Sukrya Mhatre, who arrived at the hospital with his associates. They allegedly abused and assaulted the two doctors and other hospital staff. Dr Vaibhav Salunkhe reportedly sustained injuries in the attack. FIR REGISTERED AFTER OUTRAGE, MHATRE ARRESTED Hospital authorities, led by KDMC Medical Health Officer Dr Deepa Shukla, approached the police late on Monday night, but an FIR was not immediately registered.
Following the circulation of the assault video and mounting pressure from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), doctors and hospital workers staged a “work-stop" protest on Tuesday. Representatives of the IMA’s Kalyan and Dombivli units also warned that all private clinics and hospitals in the region would shut down if police failed to register a case and arrest those responsible. A case was subsequently registered against Mhatre, four male supporters and a woman under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging official duties, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, intentional insult, unlawful assembly and rioting. Assistant Commissioner of Police Suhas Nemade said an investigation into the incident was underway and Mhatre was arrested. The assault has also triggered a political confrontation in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray questioned whether Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would take action against the ruling ally’s corporator, asking if such “goondagiri" would be tolerated. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, who is also a doctor, strongly condemned the attack and assured that strict legal and disciplinary action would be taken against those found guilty.
