(AP Photo) A disturbing investigation in Germany has uncovered an alleged online predator network in which men used coded language to discuss drugging and sexually assaulting women, while sharing images and videos of attacks on unconscious victims. The Telegram groups called themselves the “German driving school for experts", but prosecutors say the name concealed their true purpose. Members allegedly referred to women as “cars", sedatives as “fuel" and rape as “driving", according to court documents. German investigators have examined years of posts from about two dozen Telegram chats believed to involve mainly Chinese men targeting mostly Chinese women in Germany. Three alleged members of the network’s inner circle have been convicted of rape and other offences, while a fourth was convicted in Berlin on Wednesday.
Some Telegram Groups Had Up To 50,000 Members The full scale of the alleged network remains unknown. Authorities have not disclosed how many women may have been assaulted or how many perpetrators were involved. Some of the groups reportedly had tens of thousands of members and had been operating since at least 2020. Lawyer Magdalena Gebhard, who represented a victim in an earlier Berlin trial, said the network had an inner circle of eight alleged perpetrators, while some chats had as many as 50,000 members. Frankfurt chief prosecutor Dominik Mies described the alleged crimes as being marked by “particular ruthlessness", the objectification of victims and careful planning. Alleged Ringleader Sentenced To 14 Years Police discovered the network in 2024 while investigating a Frankfurt man identified by German courts as Dapeng Z., who has been described by German and Chinese media as the alleged ringleader. He was sentenced in February to 14 years in prison for aggravated rape, attempted murder and other offences, although he has appealed the verdict. In one particularly disturbing case, a woman only discovered that she had been sexually assaulted after investigators found video footage of the attack.
Suspect Allegedly Gave Tips On Drugs To Sedate Women Another defendant, Zhiting S., who was reported to be part of the group’s inner circle, faced charges including sexual assault and possession of child sexual abuse material. Prosecutors alleged that he used his previous medical training to advise Telegram group members about drugs that could be used to sedate women before sexually assaulting them. Authorities said at least one person followed his advice before an attack in Frankfurt. Similar Cases Emerge Across Countries Similar investigations into drug-facilitated sexual assaults and the online sharing of abuse material have emerged elsewhere, although authorities have not publicly established direct links to the German network. In the Netherlands, four men were arrested on suspicion of drugging and sexually abusing women after authorities received information from Germany and the UK. Police said social media groups were allegedly used to share videos of abuse and discuss ways to drug victims. Meanwhile, Europol has launched Project Medusa, an international operation targeting online networks that promote drug-facilitated sexual assault. The operation has so far led to 57 arrests.
