(Reuters file photo) Bahrain and Kuwait were placed on alert on Thursday after explosions were reported in the two Gulf countries following Iran’s warning of retaliation against US strikes on its territory. Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior said air raid sirens were activated and urged citizens and residents to remain calm and move to the nearest safe place. “The siren has been sounded," the ministry said in a post on X, urging “citizens and residents to remain calm and head to the nearest safe place." In Kuwait, the country’s military said its air defence systems were responding to what it called as hostile missile and drone threats.
“The General Staff of the Army notes that any explosions heard are a result of air defense systems intercepting hostile attacks," the Kuwait military said in a statement on X. It did not specify the source of the reported threats. Explosions were heard in Bahrain’s capital Manama, according to AFP, shortly after the sirens were activated. Iranian media also reported that the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain was targeted, but there was no immediate confirmation from US or Bahraini officials. Iran warns of retaliation The developments came after Iran vowed to respond to the latest US military strikes on its territory. Iranian state media reported that Tehran had warned US bases across the Gulf could be targeted as part of its retaliation.
The US launched fresh strikes on Iran for the second consecutive night, with US Central Command saying the operations were aimed at reducing Tehran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM also accused Iran of aggression against commercial vessels passing through the key waterway. Bahrain hosts the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, while Kuwait is also home to major US military facilities.
