US Official Says Iran Truce Has 'At Least Temporarily Ceased' Amid Fresh Strikes: Report Published By, Last Updated: July 09, 2026, 04:29 IST The official said the latest operation targeted Iranian missiles, drones and facilities near the Strait of Hormuz that could threaten US forces and commercial shipping. (Reuters) A US official has said the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran has “at least temporarily ceased" after the United States launched a fresh round of strikes on Iran overnight. Speaking to CNN, the official said the situation remained “very dynamic" and warned that more military action could follow. The official said the latest operation targeted Iranian missiles, drones and facilities near the Strait of Hormuz that could threaten US forces and commercial shipping.
The strikes were carried out by both US naval and land-based forces. The remarks came as US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it had begun “additional strikes" to further reduce Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes. Ceasefire under strain after fresh fighting The latest comments come after US President Donald Trump declared that the ceasefire with Iran was over after ordering fresh military action following Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also warned Tehran that US retaliation would become “much worse" if Iran continued targeting commercial vessels. Earlier on Wednesday, however, he said he expected the latest flare-up to end “very quickly" and left open the possibility of renewed talks. Iranian state media reported explosions in several locations along the country’s southern coast after the latest US strikes, including Bandar Abbas, Konarak and Chabahar.
What happens to the MoU? The renewed fighting has also cast doubt on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed more than three weeks ago to begin a truce between the US and Iran aimed at ending the war. The interim agreement was intended to create space for negotiations on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing Tehran’s nuclear programme after the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. However, the latest exchange of strikes has raised questions over whether those talks can proceed. Pakistan, Qatar and the United Nations have all urged both sides to exercise restraint and honour their commitments under the MoU, warning that any further escalation could deepen instability across the region.
