Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan will inaugurate the Kochi Corporation’s third roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) vessel at the Vypeen jetty on Sunday at 9.30 a.m. Although the vessel was launched on June 22, commercial operations were deferred till its formal inauguration by the Chief Minister. A review meeting in this regard was chaired by Mayor V.K. Minimol.
She announced that free rides would be offered to women on ro-ro vessels, in line with the State government’s Priyadarshini scheme that provides free travel for women in the KSRTC’s ordinary buses. Constructed at the Cochin Shipyard, the vessel can accommodate 14 trucks, 12 cars, and 50 passengers. It has been designed to overcome the shortcomings of the existing ro-ro fleet and is expected to ease travel difficulties along the Vypeen-Fort Kochi route.
Maintenance of the existing vessel will be completed at the earliest in association with the Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation Limited (KSINC). Once the new vessel is commissioned, the two existing ones will be dry-docked
sequentially. Corporation standing committee chairpersons Antony Painuthara, T.K. Asharaf, P.M. Naseema, Shakrita Sureshbabu, Seena Gokulan, K.A. Manaf, and Jismi Jerald along with Corporation secretary P.S. Shibu, officials of KSINC, police, and the Cochin Shipyard attended the meeting.
