In an interview, former Canadian minister and former British Columbia Premier Ujjal Dosanjh discussed the United States Department of Justice charging jailed Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his aide Goldy Brar with the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Dosanjh stated that transnational gangs have operated in the country for years, noting, "Canada became a base for Khalistan actually way back in the late '70s." He explained that the network has expanded into drugs and murders, with links between Khalistani militants and criminals across the USA, Canada, and Europe.
Comparing the current situation to historical crime syndicates, Dosanjh remarked, "what it reminds me of the Italian gangsters, um, way back in the, in the '20s and '30s and '40s. Um, they ran syndicates from Italy, and now you have syndicates being run from India." He acknowledged that Canada's immigration system previously lacked the capacity to fully screen entrants, allowing criminals to enter, but noted that cross-border cooperation with the US has recently enhanced under the current government.
