The Opposition BJP has urged the Congress government to pronounce its stand on the Karnataka Social and Educational Survey, often called “caste survey”, and also table the report in the forthcoming Monsoon Session of the State Legislature. Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru on Wednesday (July 8), V. Sunil Kumar, BJP State general secretary and MLA, demanded that the government schedule a debate on the report in the Legislature.
“We want to know the contents of the report that has been prepared by spending more than ₹450 crore of taxpayers’ money. We are ready for debating the issue,” he said. Accusing the Congress government of following “double standards” on the report, he remarked, “The then Chief Minister Siddaramaiah used to talk about social justice and welfare of OBCs. But in the Governor’s address to the State Legislature then, there was no mention about the Backward Classes Commission, which was preparing the report.
Also, there was not even a single line on the State Budget presented by Mr. Siddaramaiah.” He wondered how budgetary programmes could be evolved without getting data on the socio-economic and educational status. He accused the Congress government of using the name of OBCs whenever it was in trouble and later “dumping” them. “Mr. Siddaramaiah received the caste survey report in a hurry, but there is no word so far about the government’s stand on the report and the contents of the report,” he said.
The Congress government had earlier shelved a similar report, Mr. Sunil Kumar remarked, adding that the present Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar was also likely to dump the report.
