Secretary of Department of Planning, Programme Coordination and Statistics and Yadgir district in-charge Manoj Jain has directed officials to create awareness among farmers to get their crops insured compulsorily owing to shortfall in rainfall. Chairing a development review meeting on natural disasters, drinking water supply and the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Yadgir recently, he said that farmers should not suffer due to scanty rainfall and directed the officials to process crop insurance applications on a war footing without waiting for the registration deadline. As paddy and sugarcane cultivation consume excessive water, farmers should be encouraged to grow alternative crops.
The information on crop insurance should be given to farmers while distributing fertilisers and officers must work in coordination, Mr. Jain said. Insurance facilities are available for various crops such as rain-fed black gram, green gram, sunflower and red gram as well as irrigated and rain-fed cotton, bajra and red gram. Along with these, horticultural crops such as red chilli are also included in the list of crops for insurance. The officers must encourage farmers to get these crops insured, the district in-charge secretary said. As much as 5 tmcft of water has been stored at Basavasagar reservoir in Narayanapur for drinking purposes.
The officers of the department concerned should take initiatives to ensure that there is no wastage of water while it is released for drinking. “The situation will be very crucial for drinking water. Precautionary steps should be taken to store water for the next four or five months,” he cautioned and added that strict action should be taken to prevent illegal water being drawn from the NRBC. No developments should be hampered for any reason. The officers of Forest, Highway, Public Works, KBJNL and Irrigation departments should work in coordination. Those officers who hamper government projects will be booked and disciplinary action will also be taken at the government level, Mr. Jain warned.
The officers, who are entrusted with the SIR drive, should work without any faults on their part. They should distribute enumeration forms to each house and guide citizens to fill them properly with valid information. Deputy Commissioner Rahul Pandve, District Panchayat Chief Executive Lavish Ordia, Additional District Commissioner Ramesh Kolar and Assistant Commissioner of Yadgir Sub Division Sridhar Gotur were present.
