Rapid Read Ramesh Mhatre, a Shiv Sena corporator accused of assaulting doctors and hospital staff at the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation's (KDMC) Shastri Nagar Hospital. Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who was accused of assaulting doctors and hospital staff at the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s (KDMC) Hospital in Thane, was arrested on Wednesday evening after he surrendered before the police. After undergoing a medical examination, the corporator was arrested and will be produced before a local court. Investigators are expected to seek his police custody. Earlier in the day, three of his associates were also arrested in connection with the incident, taking the total number of arrests in the case to four. The arrest came hours after the Shiv Sena distanced itself from the incident. Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Eknath Shinde said no one involved in the assault would be shielded and warned that those found guilty would face disciplinary action.
He also said Mhatre should apologise if he had behaved inappropriately with the doctors. Before surrendering, Mhatre issued his first public statement after he was named an accused. While expressing regret over the altercation, he denied allegations that he assaulted a female doctor. “I regret the physical altercation that took place, but I did not raise my hand against the female doctor. The CCTV footage shows only one camera angle," he said. According to Mhatre, the doctor was on a phone call when he tried to raise the concerns of a patient’s family. He claimed he merely “tapped" her hand to get her attention. “She was on the phone and not listening to our grievances, so I tapped her hand. We follow Balasaheb’s teachings. We have never raised a hand against women and never will," he said, adding that shortcomings in the hospital’s functioning had led to the incident. Mhatre said he had rushed to the hospital after receiving a call from the family of a pregnant woman who was allegedly referred to another hospital because there were no beds available in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
He claimed repeated calls to hospital staff went unanswered, prompting him to visit the hospital personally. He also defended his use of the informal Marathi pronoun “Tu" while speaking to the doctor, saying it was not intended to insult her. “I call the doctor ‘Tu’ not out of arrogance but because I consider her like my daughter," he said.
