A powerful whirlwind tore through Kuttur in Thrissur district late on Tuesday, ripping off the entire roof truss of a house, uprooting trees and leaving a trail of destruction, even as a family of five, including children, had a narrow escape. The whirlwind struck the Thavalakkulam area in Kuttur, under the Kolazhy grama panchayat, around 10.40 p.m., amid heavy rain.
The iron-sheet roof truss of the 2,000 sq. ft. house belonging to Gopalan Chittathuparambil was ripped off by the heavy winds and hurled nearly 100 metres into a neighbouring property. Gopalan, his family and grandchildren were inside the house when they heard a deafening roar. The children screamed in fear as the roof was blown away within seconds.
Several trees were uprooted in the locality, but no injuries were reported. Gopalan said the roof truss, constructed at a cost of around โน5 lakh, was completely destroyed. Residents described the whirlwind as brief but extremely intense, with
strong winds and torrential rain lashing the area. The incident comes days after a similar whirlwind caused damage in another part of Thrissur district, raising concerns over the increasing frequency of such extreme weather events during the monsoon.
