Monsoon Chaos Hits Metro Cities: Floods, Gridlocks, And Fatalities Expose Weak Civic Infrastructure
The annual monsoon has exposed severe infrastructure failures and poor urban planning across major Indian cities, leading to waterlogging, traffic gridlocks, and loss of life
The annual monsoon has exposed severe infrastructure failures and poor urban planning across major Indian cities, leading to waterlogging, traffic gridlocks, and loss of life. In Mumbai, the Andheri subway was shut down, parts of the Western Express Highway were flooded, and a commuter sustained injuries from a falling tree branch. Neighbouring areas like Vasai, Virar, and Navi Mumbai face severe inundation and power outages.
In the Delhi NCR region, brief rainfall caused a massive three-kilometre traffic jam on Highway 48 in Gurugram, along with road cave-ins. Meanwhile, in Surat, the heavy rains turned fatal. Two children drowned in a rainwater-filled pit, and two diamond workers were killed when a massive roadside tree crashed onto commuters. As roads disappear under water and daily life comes to a standstill, the recurrent chaos highlights systemic weaknesses and raises crucial questions regarding the accountability of civic bodies and urban planners across the country.
