A landslide near an under-construction tunnel project in Wayanad, Kerala, has left workers trapped under debris. Rescue operations are underway, with three bodies recovered and five people reported missing. The state government has announced a compensation of five lakh rupees for the families of the deceased. Twenty-five families have been relocated to relief shelters. While search efforts continue, the Kerala government has blamed the tunnel project contractor, calling it a man-made disaster caused by ignored warnings and the failure to clear excavated soil.
The contractor has rejected these allegations. Concerns are also being raised about continuing work during heavy rains and permitting construction in the ecologically fragile, landslide-prone Western Ghats.
