An India Today investigation exposes the ground reality of the Mission Amrit Sarovar scheme in Madhya Pradesh, revealing that government ponds built on paper are missing in reality. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022 to rejuvenate water bodies, the mission aimed to build 75 ponds per district. While official records show over ₹737 crore spent in Madhya Pradesh, ground reports from Raisen, Rewa, and Damoh show dry land and agricultural fields instead of water bodies.
In Raisen's Silwani Block, 11 out of 30 ponds examined failed to serve their intended purpose. In Rewa, an RTI revealed that nearly ₹25 lakh was spent on a non-existent pond. Furthermore, pits dug for highway construction were falsely claimed as ponds to extract funds. With over 68,000 ponds reportedly created across India, this report highlights the widespread discrepancies in the scheme and raises questions about the misuse of taxpayer money meant for water conservation.
