The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has ordered an investigation into the causes for Tuesday’s (July 7, 2026) destructive debris slide in Wayanad. The commission’s judicial member K. Baijunath has directed the District Collector, Wayanad, and the Superintending Engineer (Roads), Public Works Department, to carry out the investigation and submit a “comprehensive report” within 15 days.
The matter will be taken up at a sitting the commission is planning on August 14, 2026 at the Municipal Town Hall, Batheri. The order was issued on the basis of a complaint that the tragedy arose from lapses on the part of the implementation agency of the under-construction tunnel road, the contractor and the government departments.
The complainant, social activist V. Devadas, attributed the accident to the decision to continue with the construction ignoring warnings issued in the wake of the strengthened monsoon rainfall in the region. Devadas also demanded measures for providing compensation to the victims and a directive to halt mining activities in the region.
He also wanted the commission to issue a direction seeking safety protocols to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
