For those living in orbit, the anniversary unfolded not just on the ground, but also from space.The International Space Station was travelling over the Los Angeles area on the night of July 4 when fireworks began appearing across the city.
From orbit, the individual displays blended into a pattern of bright flashes scattered throughout the metropolitan area.Nasa later shared footage from the station showing the scene from above. The short clip captured multiple firework shows taking place at the same time, with bursts of light appearing across the landscape below.The view was not of one single event, but of thousands of celebrations happening across a vast urban region. From the station’s perspective, the fireworks appeared as quick pulses of light against the surrounding darkness, similar to flashes moving across a distant cityscape.At the time of the anniversary celebrations, seven astronauts and cosmonauts were living aboard the International Space Station as part of Expedition 74. The crew included three Nasa astronauts: Jack Hathaway, Jessica Meir and Chris Williams. All three were serving as flight engineers during the mission.The rest of the crew represented international partners. Sophie Adenot was part of the European Space Agency’s contribution, while Andrey Fedyaev, Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev represented Russia’s space programme.
Kud-Sverchkov served as the expedition commander, while Adenot, Fedyaev and Mikaev worked as flight engineers alongside the Nasa crew members.For astronauts aboard the station, events on Earth often appear as patterns of light rather than individual moments. Cities become glowing networks, storms stretch across continents and major celebrations can sometimes be recognised from orbit.The 250th anniversary of the United States was not only marked through events on the ground. Nasa incorporated the milestone into several of its own space activities.The agency placed large “America 250” markings on the Space Launch System rocket used for the Artemis II mission, which carried astronauts around the Moon during its test flight. The four crew members also wore special patches created to recognise the anniversary. The mission represented another connection between the country’s history and its plans in space. While the Fourth of July celebrations looked back at 250 years since independence, Artemis II was focused on preparing for future human exploration beyond Earth orbit.Fireworks are usually experienced from streets, rooftops and viewing areas packed with spectators.
