A 21-year-old football fan who spent his life savings to take his grandfather to the FIFA World Cup has received an unexpected gift after their emotional journey captured attention online. Jacob Allmendinger, from North Ferriby in East Yorkshire, was left stunned when £10,000 (around Rs 11 lakh) was deposited into his bank account after his story went viral. I was just in shock,” Jacob told BBC while describing his reaction to the unexpected money. The young fan had originally spent his savings to take Geoff to watch England at the World Cup, turning the trip into a special moment for both of them. Geoff had taken Jacob to Hull City matches for much of his life, and Jacob saw the tournament as a chance to return that gesture. Since beginning their World Cup adventure, Jacob and Geoff have travelled across cities to follow England’s campaign. The pair watched England’s match against DR Congo in Atlanta before heading to Mexico City’s iconic Azteca Stadium, where they witnessed England’s 3-2 win over co-hosts Mexico. Watch the video here Speaking about the Mexico game, Jacob described it as a memorable experience. “It was a once-in-a-generation game to watch,” he said, adding that the similarities between England’s victory and their historic 1966 World Cup journey made him even more excited about the tournament.
“The parallels to now and 1966, when we last beat Mexico in the World Cup and then went on to win the whole thing, kind of gets you giddy for the rest of the trip,” Jacob said. Geoff also praised the atmosphere created by Mexican supporters, saying, “The Mexican fans were absolutely fantastic. Very happy, very boisterous. The atmosphere that's built up is fantastic.” The pair’s story has attracted attention beyond social media, with Jacob and Geoff receiving messages from people moved by their bond. “I think it just resonates with people,” Jacob told the BBC. “I’ve had people reach out who have lost their grandparents and how they wish they’d done something similar.” “It just makes us cherish this time more, really,” he added. The attention has also followed them during their travels. Geoff told the BBC that while they were in New York, a stranger recognised them and asked, “Are you the guys travelling round?” “It was brilliant,” he said.
