A CCTV video of the incident, showing the alleged assault inside the hospital, is widely being shared on social media, triggering widespread outrage. According to NDTV, the incident stemmed from a dispute over the availability of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) beds at the municipal hospital. The report said the family of a pregnant woman was informed by doctors that the newborn might require NICU care after delivery.
However, as all NICU beds at the hospital were occupied, the doctors advised the family to consider shifting the patient to another hospital if NICU admission became necessary. The situation reportedly escalated following the discussion over the unavailability of NICU beds, after which Mhatre and several supporters allegedly entered the hospital and attacked doctors and other healthcare workers on duty. The CCTV footage, which has since surfaced on social media, purportedly shows the corporator along with a group of men entering a hospital room and allegedly punching and slapping doctors and members of the nursing staff. The assault continued for more than three minutes as hospital employees attempted to protect themselves amid the chaos. One of the doctors, a woman, can be seen in the CCTV footage attempting to use her mobile phone during the incident, apparently to seek help. She is also seen trying to stop the men from continuing the alleged assault.
When some of the accused allegedly attempted to snatch her phone, she stepped behind a desk while continuing to use it. Moments later, the corporator allegedly struck the woman doctor from behind. The footage then purportedly shows him turning back towards other hospital staff members as the assault continued. According to the report, Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) Commissioner Abhinay Goyal said a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Mhatre for attacking doctors and medical staff while they were on duty. The report further said the incident triggered protests by hospital employees, who gathered in large numbers and demanded strict action against the corporator from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Doctors and healthcare workers condemned the alleged assault, saying violence against medical professionals while performing their duties could not be tolerated. Reacting after the CCTV footage surfaced online, the United Doctors Front condemned the incident. The organisation reportedly said attacks on doctors and healthcare workers were no longer isolated incidents but had become “frighteningly common."
