Israeli Strike Kills Egyptian Official Behind World Cup Screenings For Gaza Displaced Families Published By, Last Updated: July 08, 2026, 06:22 IST Egyptian Committee official Mohamed Fawaz al-Wahidi, organizing World Cup screenings for displaced families in Gaza, was killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza City. Two other Palestinians, including a child, were also reported killed in the strike, with several others injured. An Egyptian Committee official who was helping organise public screenings of FIFA World Cup matches for displaced families in Gaza was killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza City’s al-Sabra neighbourhood on Tuesday. Mohamed Fawaz al-Wahidi, also known as Abu Suhaib, was the director of the Office of Mukhtars and Community Elders at the Egyptian Committee for the Relief of the People of the Gaza Strip, Drop Site reported.
The committee confirmed his death, saying he was killed when an Israeli strike hit a civilian vehicle near the governorate building. The strike reportedly took place about an hour before Egypt’s World Cup match began. The committee had been arranging public screenings of matches for displaced families across Gaza. Two other Palestinians, including a child, were also reported killed in the strike, with several others injured. The Egyptian Committee is Cairo’s official relief organisation in Gaza. It provides aid, distributes food, supports displaced families living in camps, and helps with rubble removal. According to Drop Site, committee spokesperson Mohammed Mansour told Egyptian media outlet Masrawy that al-Wahidi was attending a neighbourhood reconciliation meeting when the strike hit the vehicle. The committee called him as a respected community figure who worked to resolve disputes and support Palestinians.
The Egyptian Committee said al-Wahidi was known for his community work and efforts to promote cooperation and social unity. Hamas Moves To Dissolve Governing Body The killing comes a day after Hamas announced the dissolution of its Government Emergency Committee, which had managed civilian affairs in Gaza since 2007. Hamas said the move was aimed at allowing a Palestinian technocratic body, the Committee for the Administration of Gaza, to take over civilian responsibilities during a transition period. The group said the decision was taken to remove what it called “pretexts" used by Israel for continuing military action in Gaza. The Palestinian militant group had overseen government services in Gaza, many of which have been severely damaged during the war.
