'Should Be Controlled By US, Not Denmark': Trump Reiterates Stance On Greenland At NATO Summit Published By, Last Updated: July 07, 2026, 23:43 IST Trump reignites Greenland debate, stating the US should "control" the Arctic territory, not Denmark. This risks further straining US-Europe relations and NATO ties. File image of US President Donald Trump. (Source: Reuters) US President Donald Trump on Tuesday reignited discussions over Greenland, stating the Arctic territory “should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark." Greenland is an autonomous territory that currently falls under the Kingdom of Denmark. Reiterating his stance on Greenland, Trump also risked reopening another old wound with NATO, AFP reported. The US-Europe relations are already at a low point.
Trump Acknowledges Friction Within NATO Trump also acknowledged that his repeated calls for the US to acquire Greenland have created friction within NATO. “That’s what hurt my relationship with NATO, because Greenland doesn’t help Denmark. Denmark doesn’t spend money to really help Greenland, but it’s an important part for the United States, and it’s surrounded by China ships and Russian ships, and that’s not going to happen," he said. “They wouldn’t go along with it, and with all the money we spend to help them with Russia." Danish PM Rejects Trump’s Remarks Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen firmly rejected Trump’s remarks, saying there was no question of Greenland changing hands and indicating the issue would not be discussed at the NATO summit.
“It is a well-known position of the United States that it wants to own and take over Greenland. I hope that it is equally well-known everywhere that this is not going to happen," Frederiksen said. Greenland’s Foreign Minister Mute Egede also reiterated that the island’s future would be decided solely by its people. In a social media post, he underlined Greenland’s commitment to maintaining close ties with its allies while rejecting any suggestion of external control. “That’s how it has always been. And that’s how it always will be," he asserted.
