In an open interview, Abbas Milani, the director of Iranian Studies at Stanford University and a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, discussed the political climate in Iran following Khamenei's funeral. He noted that the state-orchestrated event was an attempt by the regime to show strength and legitimacy despite profound internal weakness. Pointing out the deep divisions within the country, Milani stated, 'At most twelve percent of the people of Iran are in favor of the status quo.' He highlighted the tension between a radical fringe advocating for revenge against the US and those recognising the urgent need for economic relief.
Milani also raised questions about the regime's closed-door selection of a new supreme leader who has not appeared in public for four months, remarkably claiming about him, 'Nobody even knows, at least I don't know, whether he actually exists or not.' He concluded that understanding Iranian society and domestic politics is essential to navigate the complex geopolitical landscape.
