'I Think She's A Nice Person': Trump Strikes Conciliatory Tone With Italy's Meloni After Feud Published By, Last Updated: July 07, 2026, 20:53 IST Trump called Meloni a "nice person", adding that he was displeased with her due to her refusal to get involved in the Iran war. Rapid Read Italian PM Giorgia Meloni and US President Donald Trump engaged in a bitter diplomatic feud after the G7 Summit in June. (AFP) US President Donald Trump on Tuesday attempted to turn the page on a diplomatic feud with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after landing in Turkey for the NATO Summit. Trump and Meloni’s bitter feud made headlines after the former claimed she “begged" him for a photo at last month’s G7 Summit. During a press conference alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, Trump was asked to clarify his “restraining order" post targeting Meloni, which prompted a sharp response from Italy as the feud escalated. “Oh, I don’t know. I think she’s a nice person.
We’ve had a good relationship, but it became a little bad because she refused to help us. I didn’t put a heavy press on her, but she refused to get involved with Iran. You can imagine I wasn’t happy with that," he said. Trump on Italy’s Meloni:I think she is a nice person, actually. Our relationship became a little bad because she refused to help us with Iran. I think she’s a nice person. I think she made a mistake." These remarks came after Trump took a swipe at Meloni by sharing an image on his Truth Social account carrying the caption “Restraining Order Needed." The image features Trump standing in front of Meloni, who is looking up at him smiling, with the caption suggesting she was overly interested in him. What Triggered The Trump-Meloni Feud?
The dispute began after Trump publicly claimed to an Italian journalist that Meloni had “begged" him to take a photo with her at the G7 Summit in France. Meloni said she was “appalled" by the remarks and criticised him for targeting his own allies. Trump’s comments sparked political debate in Italy and drew criticism from members of Meloni’s government. After Meloni’s pushback, Trump doubled down on his claims, saying Meloni was trying to boost her failing popularity by rebuilding ties with the US. Italian officials reportedly scrapped plans to attend US Independence Day celebrations scheduled in Rome, with senior cabinet members accusing him of wrecking historical relations between the United States and Italy.
