'Government Is Paranoid': Tavleen Singh On Diljit Dosanjh's Banned Punjab Insurgency Film Satluj
Senior journalist Tavleen Singh discusses the controversy surrounding the recently banned film based on a human rights activist and the years of insurgency in Punjab
Senior journalist Tavleen Singh discusses the controversy surrounding the recently banned film based on a human rights activist and the years of insurgency in Punjab. While acknowledging that former police chief KPS Gill used harsh tactics to control a nightmare situation where terrorists targeted police families, Singh emphasizes the necessity of the film's narrative. She states, 'Just as you have to hold the terrorists to account, you have to hold the state to account.' Singh strongly opposes the censorship of the movie, arguing that taking it down from OTT platforms has only amplified its publicity.
Dismissing concerns that the movie could revive pro-Khalistani sentiments ahead of elections, she asserts that the movement has been dead for a long time. Criticizing the move to block the film despite its self-regulatory release, she notes, 'I think that the government is paranoid, and it should still let the film be seen.' Singh maintains that India is confident enough to accommodate different views on the historical insurgency.
