The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has widened its probe into the alleged 'Chanda Chori' or donation theft at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The investigation has expanded beyond stolen cash and ornaments to scrutinise over 124 crore rupees spent by the temple trust over the past two years. This includes 113 crore rupees spent on the Pran Pratishtha ceremony in January 2024.
Preliminary findings have flagged severe institutional lapses, nearly 70 theft incidents caught on CCTV, and alleged nepotism in appointments. The scandal has triggered a major reshuffle within the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra, resulting in the removal of key officials like General Secretary Champat Rai. Meanwhile, a massive political row has erupted. While the opposition termed the resignations an eyewash and demanded accountability, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hit back, accusing the Samajwadi Party and Congress of ignoring Waqf land irregularities while politicising the temple issue.
