A tragic mudslide at an under-construction tunnel site in Wayanad has left at least three dead and several others injured, triggering massive rescue operations. Heavy rainfall and a red alert in the region have worsened the situation as NDRF, police, and fire force personnel scramble to find labourers feared trapped under the debris. Preliminary reports indicate that the disaster was entirely man-made, resulting from severe negligence by the project contractors. Despite an official directive issued by the District Collector and the Disaster Management Authority on June 20 to clear accumulated soil before the monsoon, the contractors allegedly ignored the warnings.
The failure to remove the hazardous soil accumulation directly led to the mudslide, pushing vehicles and destroying the surrounding area. Surviving labourers who sustained injuries have been hospitalised and are currently in stable condition. Rescue teams from Kozhikode and Wayanad continue their relentless efforts at the site, with top state officials closely monitoring the recovery measures amidst challenging weather conditions.
