An India Today report explores the Rambam Hospital in Haifa, Israel, which features a fortified underground facility designed to handle war-like situations. The hospital can be converted from a three-story parking lot into a fully functional medical centre within eight hours. It has the capacity to treat up to two thousand and two hundred patients simultaneously. During the recent conflict, the facility transferred nine hundred patients to the underground area and is currently treating fourteen soldiers.
The underground hospital is equipped with essential medical infrastructure, including electricity, oxygen, and vacuum systems for intensive care units. It also includes a daycare centre to ensure the safety of the employees' children, allowing the medical staff to work without concern for their families. The facility was planned over two years and built over four years, covering two thousand square metres per floor.
It is designed to withstand missile attacks and chemical warfare, providing a secure environment for both patients and healthcare workers during uncertain periods in the region.
