PM Narendra Modi also pointed to cultural symbols that continue to bind the two countries, including Indonesia's national emblem, Garuda, and the vibrant festivals of Bali. Adding a lighter touch to his speech, PM Modi compared the culinary traditions of the two countries, saying it was difficult to decide whether Indonesia's krupuk or India's papad was crunchier, but both masala and Indonesia's bumbu brought flavour to everyday life.
Drawing parallels between the two democracies, PM Modi said India is the world's largest democracy and the "Mother of Democracy", while Indonesia is the world's third-largest democracy. He noted
that both countries are home to hundreds of languages, diverse traditions and multiple cultures, adding that India is guided by the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one
family), while Indonesia is founded on the principle of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). "We have both made our diversity the foundation of our unity," the Prime Minister said.
