Cyberabad civic body to launch si day oil ball drive to curb mosquito breeding
The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) will launch a si day special oil ball release campaign across all its zones as part of its monsoon preparedness
The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) will launch a si day special oil ball release campaign across all its zones as part of its monsoon preparedness measures to control mosquito breeding and prevent vector-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya. Oil balls form a thin protective layer on the water surface, preventing mosquito larvae and pupae from developing into adult mosquitoes. The campaign aims to scientifically eliminate mosquito larvae from stagnant polluted water bodies and strengthen larval control in public areas.
Mosquito breeding sites, including open drains, low-lying waterlogged areas, sewage pools, waterlogged vacant lands and other stagnant water bodies, will be identified and treated through the systematic application of oil balls. The campaign will begin with ward-wise identification and mapping of mosquito breeding sites. Civic teams will survey open drains, stagnant water bodies, sewage pools, waterlogged vacant lands and other potential breeding locations, prioritising them based on their mosquito breeding potential. On the second day, Assistant Medical Officers of Health (AMOHs) will conduct field inspections to verify the identified sites and finalise locations suitable for oil ball application.
Adequate quantities of oil balls would be made available before field teams begin operations. During the third to fifth days, oil balls will be released at all validated mosquito breeding sites in accordance with the prescribed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The quantity of oil balls used will depend on the size of the water body. The corporation said photographic documentation would be maintained before and after the application, while AMOHs would review the daily progress.
On the final day, the corporation will undertake a comprehensive review of the campaign, including the number of breeding sites identified, validated and treated, the quantity of oil balls used, operational challenges encountered and best practices adopted.
