Rapid Read French President Emmanuel Macron in Syria. (AFP) French President Emmanuel Macron sent a defiant message after twin explosions took place near a hotel in Damascus where he spent the night, saying his visit continues despite the possible security scare. Two explosions took place in central Damascus on Tuesday near the Four Seasons hotel where Macron spent the night, as per reports. One of the bombs was placed in a dumpster and another in a vehicle. However, Macron had already left the hotel for the presidential palace. “Nothing can smother the aspiration of Syrian women and men to live in a fully sovereign, safe, pluralistic, and united Syria.
This morning I met Syria in all its diversity. I saw dignity, courage, and determination," he said in a post on X. “My visit continues," he added. Rien ne pourra étouffer l’aspiration des Syriennes et des Syriens à vivre dans une Syrie pleinement souveraine, sûre, pluraliste, unie.Ce matin j’ai rencontré la Syrie dans toute sa diversité. J’ai vu la dignité, le courage et la détermination. Ma visite se poursuit. — Emmanuel Macron (@EmmanuelMacron) July 7, 2026 Earlier, France’s Elysee Palace confirmed that Macron was safe after the blasts rocked the Damascus hotel, adding that he will continue his visit as normal. Macron is the first European leader to visit Syria since the fall of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in 2024. Macron met his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa, who expressed a desire for France to become a primary partner for Damascus after the recent US-Iran conflict that triggered a crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.
Bomb Attack Wounds 18 Syrian authorities said at least 18 people were injured by the two blasts in central Damascus, which took place moments before Macron’s arrival to the presidential palace was announced. The Syrian interior ministry said 18 people, including four police officers, were injured as a result of the two explosions caused by improvised devices. AFP reported a blast echoing through Damascus before a plume of smoke was seen near the hotel. Soon after the explosions, hotel security took precautionary measures and asked those who had met with Macron to go to the hotel’s parking garage and remain there for their safety. The blasts are the second since Thursday, when 10 people were killed in a bombing in a cafe in Damascus.
