Several videos shared on social media platforms captured the dramatic moment when the second explosion ripped through the area. The footage showed flames and thick black smoke rising from near a trash container just metres away from an ambulance that had arrived after the first blast. Emergency personnel were seen rushing to contain the fire as people fled the scene. Syrian state media said the twin blasts occurred in a busy area between the Ministry of Tourism and the Museum, opposite the Four Seasons Hotel.
Authorities said at least four police officers were among the 18 people injured. According to Syrian officials, one explosive device had been planted inside a parked vehicle, while the second was concealed inside a garbage container. Both devices were described as “primitive" explosives. Security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to identify those behind the attack. Roads around the blast site were sealed as investigators began collecting evidence. Macron arrived in Syria on Monday evening, becoming the first head of state from a major European Union country to visit the country since the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. His talks with President al-Sharaa focused on rebuilding bilateral ties and supporting Syria’s political transition. The explosions came less than a week after a bomb attack at a Damascus café killed nine people, underscoring the persistent security threats facing Syria despite the change in government.
