During the second-set tiebreak of Ostapenko and Arévalo’s 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) win against Roger-Vasselin and Siegemund, the chair umpire handed the latter consecutive time violations, forcing the German star to surrender her first serve on the subsequent point.
Tensions boiled over when the players met at the net for the customary post-match handshake. It appeared that Siegemund declined to shake hands with Ostapenko, prompting an angry reaction from the Latvian, who then became involved in a heated exchange with Roger-Vasselin. Watch the video here At the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, Ostapenko entered the women’s singles main draw unseeded but made a winning start to her campaign, battling past home favourite Harriet Dart in a hard-fought three-set contest. Ostapenko followed that up with a straight-sets win against Antonia Ružić in the second round to book a third-round clash against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. But the Belarusian’s relentless power proved too much for Ostapenko to overcome.
The result was a 4-6, 4-6 loss to Sabalenka, marking Ostapenko’s fourth defeat to the world No. 1 in five career meetings. Speaking after the match, Sabalenka acknowledged the challenge posed by her opponent and lauded Ostapenko’s game. “She is really dangerous and in the last match I played against her, I could not do anything. She just smashed me off the court. I am really happy that I was able to get this win, especially in straight sets," Sabalenka had said. Ostapenko competed in the women’s doubles at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships as well, partnering Sofia Kenin. Seeded eighth, the pair saw their campaign end in the second round after a loss to Irina Khromacheva and Anastasia Detiuc.
