The family of Akriti Sutar, the 28-year-old newlywed who died after falling from a building in Delhi's Lodhi Colony, has claimed that she endured months of abuse, planned to move out and rebuild her life, but was murdered over dowry. They have also demanded a probe into her husband's sister, who had first introduced the couple. Akriti died on Saturday evening after a fall at NDMC Flats in Lodhi Colony. Her husband, Arastu Sikka, has been arrested, and a case has been registered. Speaking to Aaj Tak, India Today's sister channel, Akriti's mother alleged that her daughter had been subjected to repeated physical abuse and dowry-related harassment after her love marriage on April 24. According to the mother, the marriage was initially opposed by the family, but they eventually agreed because Arastu's sister, who was Akriti's classmate, had introduced the two. "The boy's sister trapped my daughter. She was the one who introduced my daughter to her brother," the mother alleged, demanding that she also be questioned during the investigation. The family claimed that, barely a month after the wedding, Akriti's husband began demanding dowry and pressuring her to bring money and gifts from her parental home.
They alleged that he frequently assaulted her and insisted she quit her job. Her mother said Akriti repeatedly confided that she was being beaten but chose not to immediately return home because she feared social stigma. Instead, she had planned to continue working, rent a separate accommodation and eventually move out of her matrimonial home. Rejecting any suggestion that her daughter died by suicide, the mother said Akriti had repeatedly assured her that she would never take her own life. According to her, Akriti had told her not to worry and said she would handle her problems independently, making the family believe she intended to rebuild her life rather than end it.
On the day of the incident, Akriti had gone to work in Delhi's Chhatarpur area. Her family spoke to her in the evening after she left her office. Soon afterwards, her phone became unreachable. The family later received a call from Lodhi Colony Police informing them that she had died after falling from a building. Demanding strict action, Akriti's mother alleged that her daughter was murdered and called for the harshest punishment for those responsible. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Ends
