'Rules Must Apply Equally': UK MP Asks FIFA To Lift England Star Jarell Quansah's Suspension Published By, Last Updated: July 07, 2026, 06:47 IST Law wrote to Infantino on Monday after Quansah was sent off during England’s match against Mexico following a high tackle. (AFP photo) UK MP Noah Law has urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to delay England defender Jarell Quansah’s one-match suspension, saying rules must be “applied equally" to all teams at the World Cup. He cited FIFA’s decision to overturn US striker Folarin Balogun’s red-card suspension as a reason for his appeal. Law wrote to Infantino on Monday after Quansah was sent off during England’s match against Mexico following a high tackle.
The red card means Quansah is set to miss England’s quarter-final clash against Norway. The British lawmaker said he accepted that the red card decision against Quansah was correct but questioned why the England defender’s suspension should remain while Balogun’s ban was overturned. Letter To FIFA In his letter, Law referred to FIFA’s decision to suspend Balogun’s one-match ban after the US forward was sent off during the match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. The decision allowed Balogun to play in the US’ round-of-16 match against Belgium. Law said the credibility of major international tournaments depends on rules being followed and applied fairly to all participating nations. “Whilst I believe that it was right for Jarell Quansah to have received this red card and that refereeing rules must be applied consistently, I believe it would be right to delay his suspension until after the completion of this World Cup," Law wrote in a letter to Infantino.
Balogun’s suspension was lifted after US President Donald Trump said he had spoken to the FIFA chief and requested a review of the decision. FIFA later rejected Belgium’s appeal against Balogun’s eligibility. “The integrity of any major international tournament depends not only on players and officials adhering to the rules, but also on those rules being applied equally to all participating nations," Law said. He added that FIFA should avoid a situation where “one player benefits from a delayed suspension while another, in materially similar circumstances, does not." “At a time when our multilateral system and the international rules-based order is under threat, I urge you to treat this matter with the utmost seriousness."
