He added that Nigam was arrested, the victim's sister had lodged a complaint against him, and legal proceedings had been initiated. According to police and local reports, Nigam and the woman had come in contact through social media and later became close.
Nigam has been living separately from his wife, while the woman has been a widow for around 22 years. She works at IIT Kanpur and has a 16-year-old daughter. Police said that on Saturday evening, Nigam picked up the woman from the IIT Kanpur gate after work, and the two drove towards Bithoor for an outing. During the journey, he allegedly told her that he intended to divorce his estranged wife and wanted to marry her. The woman allegedly told him that she valued their friendship but could not marry him because she had a 16-year-old daughter. According to police, Nigam became angry after she turned down the proposal and allegedly slapped her several times inside the car. When the woman tried to get out of the vehicle, he allegedly locked the door and began looking for something with which to attack her, police said.
After finding nothing inside the car, he stepped out, picked up a stone lying nearby and struck the car window after the woman locked herself inside. Police said Nigam then allegedly hit the woman on the head two to three times with the stone. She managed to get out of the car and ran onto the road, shouting for help, but he allegedly continued the assault until local residents reached the spot. Hearing her cries, people gathered there, overpowered Nigam and beat him before handing him over to the police. When police arrived, they found the woman lying on the road in a pool of blood. She was shifted to hospital by ambulance. According to the police, Nigam lives in Raj Tower in Swaroop Nagar.
His father has died, while his mother is a retired IAS officer. The police also said his mother built two guest houses in Varanasi, which provide him with an income.
