Rapid Read Trump took a jibe at Meloni ahead of NATO Summit. (Image: X) Italy has criticised US President Donald Trump over his latest social media post targeting Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, just days before this week’s NATO summit. Earlier on Sunday, Trump shared a digitally altered image on his Truth Social platform showing Meloni looking at him admiringly. The image was accompanied by the words: “Restraining Order Needed".
Trump’s Post Draws Sharp Reaction Reacting to the post, Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto downplayed its significance. “People come and go but relations must endure," Crosetto told Sky TG24. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also sought to reassure the public, stating he was “sure that transatlantic relations go well beyond individual comments." Meloni Remains Silent On Trump’s Jibe However, Meloni did not respond to Trump’s latest remarks. The exchange follows a similar episode after last month’s G7 summit, when Trump claimed that Meloni had “begged" him for a photograph and said he agreed only because he “felt sorry for her". He also alleged that the Italian leader was attempting to improve ties with Washington for domestic political reasons after Italy declined to back US military action against Iran.
Responding to those comments at the time, Meloni had said, “These constant, unprovoked attacks are senseless". She had added, “Being your friend certainly has not helped" her popularity and remarked, “I suggest you focus on yours". Meloni, who had previously sought to present herself as a bridge between Europe and Trump, has increasingly kept her distance from the US President. The latest exchange comes as Trump continues to criticise European NATO members ahead of the alliance’s upcoming summit in Ankara.
