(Representational image) In Manipur’s Ukhrul district, two Assam Rifles personnel were killed and several others were injured in a suspected ambush by militants, police said. The attack occurred around 1:30 PM in Nungshang Khong area. Militants, reportedly opened fire on a convoy of the 40 Assam Rifles, police officials informed. A search operation was launched and reinforcements were rushed to the area.
The militants ambushed a convoy of the paramilitary force when it was passing through the hilly district, a senior official was quoted saying by PTI. The agency report also said that Manipur’s Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam condemned the attack on security forces and asserted that such an incident disrupts peace and harmony in the strife-torn state. Extending the “heartfelt condolences" of the Governor, Manipur’s Lok Bhavan said they condemn “this dastardly act of violence. Such attacks have no place in our society and cannot weaken our collective resolve to uphold peace and security." On May 3 2023, violence had erupted between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur. Ever since, the state has been on a boil and it has been difficult getting it to normalcy.
Thousands of people have been displaced and over 250 were killed in the ethnic conflict. Sporadic attacks, targeted violence and armed confrontations have persisted in Manipur in spite of the increased deployment of central forces. The latest incident further underscores how peace in the state remains on the edge. The security forces, including the Assam Rifles, have been engaged in area domination and search operations in the state ever since violence erupted in 2023. Ukhrul, a hilly district, borders Myanmar. This area is sensitive not only because of its terrain but also because of that it remains close to insurgents’ movement corridors.
