In an exclusive interview, senior advocate and human rights activist Rajvinder Singh Bains discusses the legacy of Jaswant Singh Khalra and the ongoing debate surrounding extrajudicial killings in Punjab. Bains, who legally represented Khalra, dismisses allegations of Khalra possessing anti-India or Khalistani sentiments, stating, 'His thinking was as secular as my thinking.' He highlights Khalra's extensive work in gathering concrete evidence of forced disappearances, noting that activists have officially counted seventeen thousand such cases.
Addressing the controversy over a recent film based on Khalra's life, Bains argues that suppressing the narrative stems from a fear of exposing the truth. He contests the mainstream perception of former Punjab Police Chief KPS Gill, observing, 'KPS Gill is hero for many, but in Punjab he's a villain number one.' Bains maintains that citizens and the Constitution require individuals like Khalra to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law within the criminal justice system.
