Tributes were paid to former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram on the occasion of his 40th death anniversary in Mysuru on Monday. Speaking after garlanding his statue near the City Railway station, D. Thimmaiah, MLC, said Babu Jagjivan Ram was not a leader confined to any one community, but a visionary who dedicated his life to the progress and development of the entire nation. He described Babu Jagjivan Ram as a towering figure in India’s political history, an outstanding freedom fighter and a pioneer of social equality.
Inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Babuji actively participated in the national movement from the 1930s onwards and took part in the campaigns led by Gandhiji. During his tenure as Union Minister for Food and Agriculture, India was facing an acute food shortage. Owing to his foresight and decisive leadership, the Green Revolution was successfully implemented, enabling the country to achieve self-sufficiency in food production, he said. Thimmaiah noted that Babu Jagjivan Ram was India’s Defence Minister during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.
Under his capable leadership, the Indian Armed Forces secured a historic victory, leading to the creation of Bangladesh. He further said that as Deputy Prime Minister and Union Labour Minister, Jagjivan Ram introduced several landmark legislations to safeguard the rights of the oppressed, the underprivileged and workers. Many of the agricultural policies and programmes he formulated continue to guide the functioning of the Agriculture Department even today, Mr. Thimmaiah said.
MLAs Tanveer Sait and T.S. Srivatsa, MLC C.N. Manjegowda, Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikant Reddy, Chief Executive Officer of Mysuru Zilla Panchayat Yukesh Kumar, Superintendent of Mysuru district Police Mallikarjun Baladandi and Joint Director of the Social Welfare Department Rangegowda were also present.
