The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned the sale and distribution of Goree Beauty Cream, a Pakistan-made skin-lightening cream, after tests found toxic levels of mercury in the product, which was also being sold without an expiry date. The action followed complaints from Nagpur, where several women, who had been using the Goree Beauty Cream, had developed kidney-related ailments. According to officials, some of the users had purchased the product through e-commerce platforms and had been applying it regularly for nearly two years.

Laboratory analysis detected the presence of mercury, a toxic heavy metal that can cause severe damage to the kidneys, nervous system and other organs if used over a prolonged period. Officials also found that the product did not carry an expiry date, raising further concerns about its safety and regulatory compliance. In view of the findings, the FDA has imposed a complete ban on Goree Beauty Cream in Maharashtra and launched a statewide crackdown to seize existing stocks.
Raids are being conducted across several districts, including Nagpur, to identify and confiscate the product. The FDA has warned consumers against purchasing or using the skin-lightening cream, saying prolonged exposure to mercury-containing cosmetics can have serious health consequences. It also said a special enforcement drive against Goree Beauty Cream is currently underway across Maharashtra, and efforts are being made to track its sales through online platforms as well as local distributors. Authorities have urged people to report any instances of the cream being sold in the state.
