Legislators from Bidar district have urged Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to take immediate steps to revive and restart the Bidar Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane (BSSK) describing the cooperative sugar factory as a lifeline for thousands of farmers in the district. During the Chief Minister’s visit to Bidar district on Monday, legislators Shailendra Beldale, Sharanu Salagar and Siddu Patil submitted a memorandum seeking the early revival of the long-defunct sugar factory.
The legislators stated that the prolonged closure of the factory has severely affected thousands of sugarcane growers, workers and their families who are dependent on the factory for their livelihood. They pointed out that reopening the factory will help provide sugarcane farmers with a stable market for their produce, generate local employment and boost economic activity in the district.
Stressing the need to safeguard farmers interests and promote industrial development in Bidar, the MLAs urged the State government to accord priority to the revival of the cooperative sugar
factory. They also appealed to the Chief Minister to take an early and favourable decision to facilitate the reopening of BSSK and provide relief to the district’s farming community.
