A family’s pilgrimage to Umrah turned into an opportunity for two close relatives and an employee, who allegedly broke into their house and stole cash and jewellery kept aside for a daughter’s wedding. Habeeb Nagar police have now arrested all three accused and recovered the entire stolen property worth ₹29 lakh. The accused were identified as Mohd Younus, 35, a clothes trader from Mallepally, Shaik Rameez Mohiuddin, 23, a businessman from Habeebnagar, and Pole Sandeep, 37, a helper at the victim’s ladies clothing store in Begum Bazaar.
According to Asif Nagar ACP K Srinivasu, Mohd Younus and Rameez are cousin brothers and close relatives of the victim, Shaik Akbar Mohiuddin. “Sandeep had been working at the victim’s shop for the past 12 years. The trio knew that the family had left for Umrah on June 23 and conspired to target the locked house,” said the officer. He added that the accused broke open the main door and an almirah of the house and escaped with ₹16 lakh in cash and about 13.5 tolas of gold ornaments that had been kept for the daughter marriage of victim’s daughter.
The breakthrough came after investigators examined CCTV footage, analysed scientific evidence, verified fingerprints and carried out local enquiries. Inspector of Habeeb Nagar police, T. Purushottam said that on July 3, while conducting vehicle checks near Bhoiguda, they intercepted a suspicious scooter. “The occupants, Mohd Younus and Sandeep, were allegedly found carrying the stolen gold ornaments and cash in the vehicle’s boot,” explained the officer. During interrogation, the duo revealed the involvement of Rameez, who was later apprehended. Police recovered his share of the stolen cash, resulting in the recovery of the entire stolen property.
The recovered property includes 134.440 grams of gold ornaments, ₹12.5 lakh in cash, a Rado watch worth ₹1.4 lakh, a pair of silver anklets and the scooter bearing registration number TS 12 EB 0297 used in the offence. A case was registered at Habeebnagar police station under Sections 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The three accused were arrested on July 3 and remanded to judicial custody.
