Apollo Spectra Hospitals on Sunday felicitated veteran orthopaedic surgeon K. Thangaraj in recognition of his nearly six decades of service to the field of orthopaedics. Speaking on the occasion, Padma Shri awardee Danari Prasad Rao and Praveen Limaye, senior vice-president and managing director, lauded Thangaraj’s pioneering contributions to orthopaedic care in India.
They said his clinical expertise, commitment to teaching and research, and unwavering adherence to ethical medical practice had inspired generations of orthopaedic surgeons and benefited thousands of patients. Dr Thangaraj has treated more than 4,600 patients with bone tumours, many of whom underwent complex limb-salvage procedures.
He is also recognised for introducing universal prostheses in India, making advanced orthopaedic treatment more affordable. Before their introduction, customised implants had to be imported at a cost of around ₹4,000 to ₹5,000, placing them beyond the reach of many patients. Universal prostheses reduced the cost to ₹1,000 to ₹1,500.
Dr Thangaraj also served as head of the department of Orthopaedics at Osmania General Hospital and later as professor and head of Orthopaedics at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences.
