India also operates the Sukhoi-30MKI variant in its Air Force. President Prabowo Subianto personally welcomed the Prime Minister at the airport, a gesture that PM Modi later described as “touching" in a post on X. He said, “Landed in Jakarta. I’m touched by President Prabowo Subianto’s gesture of welcoming me at the airport. In 2018 we elevated our relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has benefitted our people. During this visit, President Prabowo Subianto and I will hold discussions aimed at adding even more momentum to this partnership across diverse sectors." Following his arrival, the Prime Minister witnessed a cultural performance organised in his honour before beginning his official engagements in Indonesia.
The prime minister said this would be his first bilateral visit since the elevation of the bilateral ties and comes after President Prabowo’s state visit to India as the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations in January 2025. “India and Indonesia share strong civilisational and people-to-people ties, and my visit will further deepen all aspects of our multifaceted partnership," he said. The visit is expected to focus on expanding the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with discussions covering maritime security, defence cooperation, connectivity, trade, energy and digital collaboration. Indonesia is India’s largest trading partner in ASEAN and occupies a strategically crucial position along the Malacca Strait, through which a significant share of global trade and energy shipments passes. During this visit, PM Modi will interact with the Indian diaspora in Indonesia and visit the Prambanan Temple complex at Yogyakarta with President Prabowo, which is another remarkable testament to the close cultural ties between the two countries.
