India is in the middle of a massive fuel transition, with E20 petrol now the standard blend at pumps nationwide. The central government is pushing for even higher ethanol blends, including E22, E30, and eventually E100 fle fuel vehicles, to reduce crude oil imports, cut carbon emissions, and support sugarcane farmers. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently confirmed legal recognition for hundred percent ethanol as a fuel.
While the ethanol blending program has saved over 1.63 lakh crore rupees in foreign exchange, it is causing severe physical issues for older vehicles. Ethanol absorbs moisture rapidly, leading to engine corrosion, damaged rubber components, and drastically reduced mileage in cars not built for higher blends. Furthermore, an RTI reply revealed that even premium fuels contain twenty percent ethanol, leaving expensive hundred octane petrol as the only ethanol-free option.
Viewers are advised to use anti-corrosion petrol additives and avoid leaving E20 fuel stagnant in partially filled tanks to minimize long-term vehicle damage.
