Ratna Debnath, the mother of the RG Kar rape and murder victim and BJP MLA from Panihati, reacted to the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in West Bengal’s Baruipur on Monday. Speaking to the media, Debnath blamed successive governments in the state for the rise in such crimes, alleging that both the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress had encouraged gambling and alcohol consumption among youth instead of prioritising education and healthcare. She said the consequences of those policies were now being seen. Read Full Story “It is very sad, even more so for me. I spent the entire night crying because another set of parents had to endure the same fate,” she said. Her remarks come a day after she urged the BJP government to expedite justice in the RG Kar case. Debnath said two months had elapsed since Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari assured her that her daughter would get justice within seven days of the BJP coming to power.
CONDEMNS LYNCHING OF SUSPECT While reiterating her confidence in the government, Debnath said those responsible would face strict punishment. Condemning the lynching of the prime suspect, she said people should not have taken the law into their own hands and should instead have handed him over to the police. “After the RG Kar incident, people have become so angry that they did not spare him. They may have feared that if they handed him over, he might escape or something else might happen. That is why he was killed. But this is not desirable,” she said, linking the public reaction to the outrage following the 2024 RG Kar case. Debnath also rejected allegations that a local BJP leader was involved in the incident. She claimed that many Trinamool Congress workers had begun identifying themselves as BJP supporters after the party’s recent electoral victory. RG KAR VICTIM'S MOTHER SLAMS MAMATA She defended the police’s decision to prevent former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from visiting the area following the incident.
“The police did the right thing by stopping her. What would she have achieved by going there? She would probably have offered compensation to the victim’s family and protected the accused, as she has done for years,” she alleged. Drawing a parallel with the RG Kar case, Debnath further accused Banerjee of failing to deliver justice despite earlier holding the health portfolio. “In my daughter’s case too, why was justice delayed? Why were the accused protected? Why was taxpayers’ money spent to defend a few civic volunteers? People no longer believe such actions. Those responsible must be punished,” she said. THE INCIDENT & DEVELOPMENTS SO FAR The incident took place in the Surjyapur area of Baruipur. According to police, the girl had left her home on Saturday afternoon to buy a gift for her friend’s birthday but did not return. Her family alleged that four people forcibly took her away and claimed they searched for her throughout the night. They also accused the police of not responding adequately to their pleas for help.
