A suggestion for taking T.T.V. Dhinakaran, the founder of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) back into the fold of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) was made during a meeting chaired by the AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami with office bearers of different units of the party, in Thanjavur on Monday (July 6, 2026). Articulating this point at the meeting, a functionary from the district Padma Kumaresan said, when he conveyed the idea to Mr. Palaniswami, who heard it “intently,” the latter replied to him that Mr. Dhinakaran was running a party of his own.
A senior functionary of the party, who was present at the meeting, confirmed the exchange of views. The matter did not figure again in the subsequent deliberations, he added. Thanjavur was one among the districts where the AIADMK and its allies drew a blank. In the neighbouring Mayiladuthurai too, the coalition led by the Dravidian major fared poorly. Put together, the two districts have 11 constituencies. In the Assembly election when the AIADMK headed a coalition that included the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and the AMMK, only in Peravurani in the Thanjavur district did the AIADMK finish the runner-up to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) with 32.77% of votes polled.
But, in three other constituencies - Thiruvidaimaruthur, Orathanadu and Pattukottai, it came third next to the runner-up, the TVK. In these three places where the DMK had won, the AIADMK’s vote share was in the range of 22.66%
in Orathanadu to 26.98% in Pattukkottai. The idea of bringing the AMMK founder back to the party did rounds about a month ago. At that time, Mr. Dhinakaran, when asked, replied that he was “even now” with the AIADMK.
