Preliminary post-mortem findings in the case of an 11-year-old girl whose body was found stuffed in a sack and taken out of a pond near Kolkata indicate head injuries, sexual assault and drowning, police said on Monday. The child had gone missing on Saturday after leaving home to buy a birthday gift for a friend, and her body was recovered on Sunday. Read Full Story Police have arrested the key accused, taking the total number of arrests in the case to three. A senior officer said the investigation was at a crucial stage and that the preliminary post-mortem findings were being matched with other material collected during the probe.
The girl had left her home in South 24 Parganas' Baruipur on Saturday. Her family later lodged a missing complaint with the police. Her body was found in a pond around 25 km from Kolkata on Sunday. According to a senior police officer, the preliminary post-mortem found injury marks on the girl's private parts, along with scratch and bite marks on different parts of her body. It also indicated that her head had either been hit with a heavy object or banged against a hard surface, the officer said, citing the report. The report also suggested that the child was alive when she was thrown into the pond, as water was found in her lungs and stomach during the examination.
Police sources said the findings indicated that excessive bleeding from the head injury, along with drowning, led to her death. Immediately after the body was recovered, a mob lynched a man on suspicion of involvement in the girl's rape and murder. "The investigation is at a crucial stage. We are examining all evidence. The preliminary post-mortem findings are being corroborated with other material collected during the probe," a senior police officer said. Police have examined CCTV footage from the area, which purportedly showed the girl being taken away by four persons, the officer said. He added that the footage was being analysed to establish the identities of the accused and their role in the crime.
"We are pursuing all available leads. CCTV footage, forensic evidence and witness statements are being examined. Those involved will be identified and arrested at the earliest," the officer said. The case centres on the disappearance of the 11-year-old from Baruipur, the recovery of her body from a pond near Kolkata, the preliminary post-mortem findings pointing to assault and drowning, and the arrest of three people as police continue to examine evidence and CCTV footage.
