Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari addresses a gathering (Photo: PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, on Monday, demanded the death penalty for those responsible for the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur, saying the accused should receive the strictest punishment under the law. Addressing the media, Adhikari said, “No one will be spared. The accused should be given capital punishment. We want exemplary punishment so that such incidents are not repeated." His remarks came amid mounting outrage over the alleged gangrape and murder of the minor in South 24 Parganas district and as police stepped up their investigation into the case.
The victim’s body was recovered from the Surjyapur Haat area in Baruipur, where it was allegedly found stuffed inside a sack, triggering widespread protests by residents demanding immediate action against those responsible. According to news agency PTI, police have arrested two persons in connection with the case and detained three others for questioning. A si member Special Investigating Team (SIT) has also been constituted to investigate the case. Police said the investigation is progressing and further action will be taken based on evidence collected during the probe. The recovery of the girl’s body sparked large-scale protests in the area, with residents blocking the Baruipur-Joynagar Road, burning tyres and damaging several police vehicles while demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. Hours after the body was recovered, a man suspected by locals of being involved in the girl’s death was allegedly beaten to death by an angry mob.
In response to the unrest, authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in the Baruipur, Narendrapur and Sonarpur areas to maintain law and order. Police also appealed to the public not to believe rumours and warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to disturb peace. Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister also assured that those responsible would face the strictest punishment. “Capital punishment will be given in the Baruipur incident. I am finding similarities between this and what happened in Samserganj and Beldanga. The investigation is underway. No one will be spared. It is not appropriate for me to say anything more than this while the investigation is ongoing," the Chief Minister said. The incident has triggered sharp political exchanges even as police continue their investigation into the alleged rape and murder and authorities maintain heightened security in parts of South 24 Parganas.
