Mumbai employees have been advised to work from home as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the city on Monday, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and gusty winds up to 80 kmph. According to a report by Mid-day, the Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has asked private offices in Mumbai to permit employees to work from home wherever feasible. Non-essential government offices will function only for half a day in view of the worsening weather, the advisory said.
Citizens have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated through official channels. Red Alert For Mumbai, Thane, Raigad The IMD upgraded its warning from orange to red for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad on Monday morning after detecting a shift in weather patterns. The department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, with intermittent gusty winds of 70-80 kmph likely over the region. Officials have appealed to residents to step out only if absolutely necessary. Flooding, Landslide Risk Flagged The weather department has warned of possible flooding in low-lying and urban pockets, along with flash floods and rising water levels in catchment areas. Roads and bridges in vulnerable zones may see water flowing over them, while weak trees and poorly maintained structures face a heightened risk of damage. Landslides, mudslides and rock falls have also been flagged as possibilities in susceptible areas.
Rough sea conditions are expected along the Konkan coast, with potential disruptions to road, rail, air and ferry services, as well as to water and power supply. Safety Advisory For Commuters And Residents The IMD has asked commuters to check traffic updates before heading out and to follow instructions from local authorities. People have been advised against sheltering under isolated structures or tall trees during thunderstorms, staying in unsafe buildings, or working in open spaces. Residents have also been told to unplug electrical appliances, stay clear of water bodies, and avoid contact with conducting materials to minimise lightning risk. Farmers Told To Safeguard Crops With strong winds and heavy rain expected to affect plantations and standing crops, the IMD has advised farmers to harvest mature crops without delay and secure the produce. Shifting stored grain to safer locations, holding off on irrigation and chemical spraying, and ensuring proper field drainage have also been recommended.
