A woman from Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor district has alleged that after assaulting her and pronouncing triple talaq, her husband forced her into nikah halala, during which his elder brother allegedly raped her. In her police complaint, the woman said she married Nadeem around a year ago. Despite her family providing a dowry, including household appliances, furniture, a motorcycle, jewellery and Rs 2 lakh in cash, her in-laws remained dissatisfied and subjected her to physical and mental harassment, she claimed.
Read Full Story The woman said that on the night of May 19, her husband assaulted her by kicking and beating her, causing severe pain at the site of a previous surgery. She claimed that while she was in pain, Nadeem pronounced "talaq" three times and asked her to leave the house. The following day, she approached the police to lodge a complaint. But her husband and his family persuaded her to return home by assuring her that he would marry her again.
According to the complaint, before the proposed remarriage on May 30, Nadeem allegedly told her that she would first have to undergo halala with his elder brother, Waseem. She claimed she opposed the demand but alleged that Waseem subsequently raped her in the name of halala. The woman further alleged that she was prevented from informing her family, confined to the house and assaulted whenever she attempted to leave. She said she eventually managed to contact her relatives, following which her sister-in-law came and took her away.
She also alleged that despite approaching the police again, no case was initially registered. The FIR was lodged only after she approached the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Bijnor with her complaint. Based on her complaint, police have registered a case against Nadeem, a separate rape case against Waseem. Waseem's wife, Nagma, has also been named in the FIR for allegedly supporting the accused.
