The recent consecutive hikes in petrol and diesel prices have severely impacted the transport industry in Chandigarh. Members of the Chandigarh Transport Association report that diesel now accounts for 60 to 70 percent of their total operational costs per trip. In response to the escalating expenses, which also include rising toll taxes, green taxes, and tyre maintenance, transporters are implementing a 10 percent increase in freight rates.
The association members have urged the government to implement fuel price changes at once rather than in installments, as frequent fluctuations disrupt their tendering process with corporate clients. The transporters emphasize that they are operating on minimal margins and have no choice but to pass the increased operational costs onto traders. Consequently, this rise in freight charges will ultimately increase the financial burden on the common consumer through higher prices for essential goods.
